Rangpur: The weather remained mostly unchanged following little ups and downs in both the minimum and maximum temperatures at most places in the northern region during the last 24 hours ending at 4 pm today. The local Met Office sources said the improving trend of the weather continued for the fourth consecutive day today. However, there is a possibility of another cold spell after two days from or after January 9 again in the region.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, earlier, the weather deteriorated on Tuesday and Wednesday last, causing cold conditions with a reduction of the gap between maximum and minimum temperatures when minimum temperatures ranged between 9 and 13 degrees Celsius. Things started becoming normal from last Friday morning when the sun emerged, penetrating thick layers of fog and clouds, bringing relief to people in the sub-Himalayan northern region.
The vehicular movements on roads and highways and activities in different institutions, business centers, markets, hats and bazaars, river ports and ferry ghats, bus stands and terminals, and railway stations gained momentum today like the previous three days. The Met Office recorded the minimum temperature of 15.00 degrees Celsius at 6 am and a maximum of 28.1 degrees Celsius at 4 pm in Rangpur city today against yesterday's minimum of 14.5 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 28.6 degrees Celsius respectively.
In addition, today's minimum temperature was recorded at 13.00 degrees Celsius at Dinajpur, similar to yesterday, 13.8 degrees Celsius against yesterday's 13.00 degrees Celsius at Saidpur, 13.00 degrees Celsius against yesterday's 12.5 degrees Celsius at Dimla in Nilphamari, and 14 degrees Celsius against yesterday's 13 degrees Celsius at Rajarhat in Kurigram district. The maximum temperature was recorded yesterday at 29.3 degrees Celsius at Dinajpur, 28.3 degrees Celsius at Tentulia, 29.00 degrees Celsius each at Saidpur and Dimla, and 27.5 degrees Celsius at Rajarhat points in the northern region.
"The weather may remain mostly unchanged until January 8 in the region where there is a possibility of another mild cold wave again from January 9," Head of the Rangpur Meteorological Office Md Mostafizar Rahman told BSS this afternoon. Reports reaching here from different northern districts indicate that common people, farm-and day-laborers continued their normal activities everywhere, including remote char areas, and Boro seedling plantation gained momentum today.
The district administrations, NGOs, voluntary and socio-cultural organisations, business community leaders, different banks, and affluent people have been distributing warm clothes among the cold-hit distressed people. Additional Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension for Rangpur region, Agriculturist Md Obaidur Rahman Mondal, stated that tender plants of winter crops and Boro seedlings are growing normally following improvement of the weather in recent days. Reports from rural and remote char areas said the sufferings of people living in Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Gaibandha, Rangpur, Nilphamari, Joypurhat, Naogaon, Bogura, Thakurgaon, Panchagarh, and Sirajganj districts continued easing today.
