Rajshahi: Social watchdogs at a human-chain today emphasized the importance of taking stern action against unscrupulous businessmen as a crucial means of controlling the hike in essential commodity prices. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the social watchdogs expressed their concerns over the rising prevalence of dishonest and greedy businessmen, stressing that legal action is imperative for the welfare of consumers. This call to action was made during a meeting organized by the District Committee of the Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) at Shaheb Bazar Zero Point, where an eight-point demand was placed to curb the price hike of essential commodities. Key speakers at the meeting included CAB local unit General Secretary Golam Mostofa Mamun, Prof. Abdus Salam Al Madani from the Department of Arabic at Rajshahi University, and CAB members Mustafizur Rahman Khan, Liakat Ali, Amlan Aniruddha, Zulfikar Ali, Subrata Hembrom, Rubel Sarker, and Rawshan Islam. Golam Mostofa Mamun highlighted that d espite the fall of a fascist and autocratic government through a mass upsurge of students and citizens, corrupt businessmen and greedy market syndicates continue to thrive in the markets. The meeting underscored that the unscrupulous circle is responsible for driving the prices of various essential commodities, such as potatoes, onions, and soybean oil, beyond the purchasing capacity of common people. The speakers unanimously agreed that drastic action against these dishonest businessmen is urgently needed to safeguard the interests of consumers.
