Dhaka: Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan today emphasized that waste burning is strictly prohibited, whether at the Matuail Sanitary Landfill or any other location. She made this statement while speaking to journalists after inspecting the Matuail landfill in Dhaka, highlighting the need for initiatives to ensure the safety and wellbeing of those living near landfill areas.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Rizwana acknowledged that the immediate relocation of the landfill from Matuail is not feasible. However, she indicated that two nearby steel mills would be directed to cease operations. She also made it clear that burning batteries or extracting lead from them is not allowed, noting that the Department of Environment has already taken action against certain battery factories and will continue to do so if new complaints emerge.
During her visit, Rizwana addressed the severe air pollution issue in Dhaka, calling it a significant public health concern. She urged for coordinated efforts between city corporations, the Department of Environment, and other relevant agencies to address this issue. Additionally, she stressed the importance of public awareness along with government initiatives and warned that violators of environmental regulations would face penalties.
The environment adviser visited several air pollution-prone areas, including Matuail Sanitary Landfill, Samadnagar in Jatrabari, Narsingdi Road, Chittagong Road, Kachpur, Sharifpara, and various locations under both Dhaka North and South City Corporations. She reviewed air pollution control measures and engaged with local residents.
Residents expressed their health concerns, particularly respiratory issues caused by pollution, and demanded the swift relocation of the landfill along with urgent measures to halt waste burning to protect public health. Rizwana listened to their concerns and assured them of suitable actions.
The visit was attended by Mohammad Azaz, Administrator of Dhaka North City Corporation; Md. Shahjahan Mia, Administrator of Dhaka South City Corporation; Rubina Ferdousi, Deputy Secretary (Environment) of the Ministry; and RSM Munirul Islam, Conservator of Forests, among others.
