Dhaka: The Election Commission of Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) has disqualified Amartya Ray Jon, a Vice-President (VP) candidate from the ‘Sompriti Oikya’ panel. The commission declared him ineligible both as a voter and a candidate under the constitution of the JUCSU.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the decision regarding Amartya Ray Jon, a student of the Archaeology department from the 2017-18 academic session, was announced in a notification published on the university’s official website. With Registration No. 46984 and residency at A F M Kamaluddin Hall, he was disqualified from both the voters’ list and the candidate list in accordance with sections 4 and 8 of the JUCSU constitution.

Amartya Ray, who is a former president of the JU unit (Amartya-Riddhya faction) of Bangladesh Students’ Union, expressed that he could not comment extensively at the moment. He mentioned that discussions are ongoing within their panel and they are consulting with everyone involved. He assured that no decision would be taken against the interests of the students.

He emphasized their intention to proceed systematically, adhering to university law and the JUCSU Election Commission’s regulations. Although he could not provide further details at the moment, he promised to inform everyone once a decision is reached.

When questioned about the possibility of filing a writ petition with the High Court to challenge his disqualification, Amartya Ray stated that they are not considering that option currently. Decisions will be made after comprehensive consultations with all stakeholders, ensuring that students’ interests are prioritized. Once a final decision is made, it will be communicated.
