Dhaka: Newly appointed Adviser to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Syeda Rizwana Hasan today emphasized the importance of presenting truthful and verified information by the media to counter propaganda, disinformation, and misinformation during election periods. She stressed that vigilance is crucial to ensure misleading information does not influence elections or undermine the democratic process.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Rizwana Hasan made these remarks during a meeting with ministry officials and heads of departments and agencies under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, held at the ministry's conference room at the Bangladesh Secretariat. Rizwana Hasan, who also serves as the environment, forest, and climate change adviser, noted that the government expects the media to be independent, strong, and accountable, advocating for a flow of information that is both free and responsible.
She clarified that the government does not aim to control the media but seeks its constructive role in democratic transitions by disseminating accurate and credible information. Rizwana highlighted the media's significant role in strengthening democratic practices and urged that this role be carried forward with enhanced professionalism and responsibility.
Acknowledging the growing influence of digital platforms, she called on journalists and media outlets to maintain caution, ethics, and professionalism, particularly in the use of social media. The adviser reiterated the government's commitment to supporting the media in standing by accurate information, underscoring the need for a credible media system founded on freedom, accountability, and justice.
The meeting was attended by Mahbuba Farzana, Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting; Nur Md. Mahbubul Haque, Additional Secretary (Administration); Dr. Mohammad Altaf-ul-Alam, Additional Secretary (Broadcast and Press); among other senior ministry officials. Heads of various departments and agencies also participated, extending floral greetings to the newly appointed adviser. Following the meeting, Rizwana Hasan addressed questions from media representatives on contemporary issues.
