Dhaka: US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor emphasized the potential for increased economic cooperation between Bangladesh and the United States during his recent visit to Dhaka. He underscored the United States' high regard for Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and the opportunities that exist for both nations to achieve significant results through collaboration.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Gor's visit to Bangladesh from July 30 to August 1 was aimed at strengthening economic ties and exploring partnership opportunities. Discussions with the Prime Minister focused on enhancing economic cooperation, especially in sectors like pharmaceuticals and information technology. Gor noted that the US has already taken steps to foster closer engagement with Bangladesh, including lowering the travel advisory to promote tourism and investment.
Gor also announced that a delegation of US companies is set to visit Bangladesh to explore investment opportunities further. The Special Envoy highlighted the commitment from both sides to boost bilateral cooperation and elevate their partnership. The US Embassy in Dhaka noted that the visit underscored the breadth and depth of the US-Bangladesh relationship, with discussions covering political and economic dynamics.
During his visit, Gor addressed the Rohingya crisis, praising Bangladesh's efforts in providing refuge to over one million Rohingyas and calling for a sustainable political solution. He visited the Rohingya camps in Cox's Bazar alongside US Ambassador Brent T Christensen and urged international partners to enhance their support for the refugees.
The meetings also included discussions on resuming testing activities in cooperation with the US Food and Drug Administration, as well as other areas of mutual interest. Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman and other senior officials were present during the discussions, which were described as warm and cordial by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The US's updated travel advisory for Bangladesh, lowering it to Level 2, reflects growing confidence in Bangladesh's security and stability under Prime Minister Rahman's leadership. This development is seen as a positive step forward in the longstanding partnership between Bangladesh and the United States, highlighting the progress made in ensuring a secure environment for international travel and investment.
