Dhaka: US Charg© d’affaires Tracey Ann Jacobson today called on BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at the party chairperson’s Gulshan office this morning. Party Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Organizing Secretary Shama Obaid were present during the meeting.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Amir Khasru informed reporters in a media briefing that the US envoy, along with her team, engaged in an extensive discussion on bilateral issues, particularly focusing on the tariff imposed on Bangladesh by the USA. Khasru highlighted that the US delegation sought the BNP’s opinion on the tariff issue, emphasizing the necessity for cooperation with the government to find a viable solution. He stressed that an increase in tariffs on Bangladeshi products could significantly impact the country’s garment exports, and BNP is committed to collaborating with the government to ensure a fair resolution.
The meeting also covered discussions on enhancing trade relations between the two nations and exploring opportunities to increase investment in Bangladesh. In response to a query regarding electoral discussions, the BNP leader confirmed that the topic naturally arose during the meeting. He mentioned that the meeting between the chief adviser and Tarique Rahman in London was appreciated, highlighting its significance in steering the country towards elections and democratic transformation. Khasru noted that the country is moving towards democratic change, and there is a collective sense of relief as the nation progresses towards elections.
