Narsingdi’s Shibpur Upazila Parishad Chairman Harunur Rashid Khan sustained bullet injuries as criminals fired at him at his residence this morning.

Harun was initially rushed to Shibpur Upazila Health Complex and later moved to Dhaka Medical College Hospital due to his critical condition, Shamsul Alam Rakhil, general secretary of the upazila unit of Awami League, said.

The chairman, also former president of the upazila unit of AL, received three rounds of bullets in the back, he said, quoting physicians.

Protesting the attack, supporters of the chairman surrounded the local police station, demonstrated and burnt tyres, creating panic among people in the area.

Apart from this, the chairman’s supporters also put barricades on Dhaka-Monohardi road by placing logs – resulting in a tailback on both sides of the road.

Firoz Talukdar, officer-in-charge of Shibpur police station, said the chairman unlocked his residence’s gate when some unidentified people came to him seeking “donation”.

“The attackers fired three rounds of bullets at him as soon as he opened the gate,” he said, adding that the criminals fled the scene right away.

Additional law enforcers were deployed in the area to ward off any unwanted incident further, the OC added.
