UNESCO Representative Engages in Media Reform Talks with Bangladesh Information Adviser

Dhaka: UNESCO Representative to Bangladesh Sue Vize today engaged in discussions with Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md Mahfuj Alam at his office at the secretariat here.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, during the meeting, the adviser mentioned that the government has already initiated several measures aimed at reforming the media landscape. A press release highlighted that a decision has been made to establish a taskforce dedicated to reforming the circulation audit system of newspapers. Additionally, efforts are in progress to draft an ordinance focused on protecting journalistic rights.



Md Mahfuj Alam further noted that this ordinance is expected to be issued soon. He expressed optimism about the potential implementation of additional media-related reform activities over the coming months. Addressing concerns about media freedom in Bangladesh, Mahfuj emphasized that the government exerts no pressure on the media, asserting that news dissemination remains completely independent.



Furthermore, the adviser revealed that steps are being taken to develop a code of conduct for newspapers and journalists. This initiative is being pursued in collaboration with media institutions and relevant stakeholders, ensuring a comprehensive and inclusive approach.



UNESCO International Consultant Lena Fox was also present at the event, underscoring the collaborative efforts being made in the sphere of media reform.
