UNESCO Representative Discusses Media Reforms with Bangladesh’s Information Adviser

Dhaka: Susan Vize, Head of Office and UNESCO Representative to Bangladesh, paid a courtesy call on Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md Mahfuz Alam at the ministry this afternoon. The meeting focused on ongoing efforts within the ministry to enhance media freedoms and protections in the country.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Adviser Md Mahfuz Alam highlighted that the Information and Broadcasting Ministry is actively working on formulating the Journalism Rights Protection Ordinance. This ordinance is being developed based on the recommendations from the Media Reform Commission, aiming to safeguard journalists’ rights and ensure a free press.



Amid discussions about the upcoming national parliamentary election, the Adviser reassured that the government is committed to fostering an independent media environment. He emphasized that there is currently no government interference in media operations, underscoring the expectation for media to maintain a neutral and responsible stance.



The meeting also covered topics such as the functions of the Bangladesh Press Council, initiatives by the ministry for journalist training, and strategies to combat rumors and misinformation.
