UK AL Leader Ashraful Sent to Jail in Murder Case.

Dhaka: A court here today sent Barrister M Ashraful Islam, a 50-year-old leader of the Awami League United Kingdom (UK) unit, to jail in connection with a case filed over the murder of Jubo Dal leader Shamim. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Saifuzzaman issued the order after police presented Ashraful in court and requested that he be detained until the investigation into the case is completed. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Barrister M Ashraful Islam was apprehended in the capital today. The case documents reveal that on October 28, 2023, the BNP had called for a grand rally. In response, the Awami League also organized a grand rally in the capital, which reportedly led to Awami League supporters, with police assistance, attacking the BNP rally at Naya Paltan, resulting in Shamim's death. The murder case was officially filed at the capital's Paltan Police Station on September 24, 2024, marking it a critical incident in the ongoing political tensions between the two parties.
