Khulna:A delegation from the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh recently visited Khulna University (KU) to evaluate the feasibility of establishing an International Language Institute and a School of Coastal Zone Management at the Paikgachha campus.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the delegation was led by UGC Member Prof Dr Md Aslam Hossain. The visit began with an inspection of the current facilities intended for the International Language Institute. The university's syndicate had earlier approved a proposal to upgrade the existing Modern Language Centre into this specialized institute, which could commence operations following UGC approval. The delegation expressed satisfaction with the facilities upon their inspection.

Following this, the team reviewed the academic and administrative infrastructure at KU's Paikgachha campus. Discussions were held with engineers and contractors about the condition and progress of the facilities. The university administration shared plans for the School of Coastal Zone Management, which would include departments focused on Climate Change and Disaster Management and Oceanography.

KU aims to transform the campus into a hub for education and research on coastal ecosystems and climate change, leveraging its geographical location and infrastructure. The UGC delegation showed optimism about the campus's potential to become a leading center for these studies in Bangladesh and assured cooperation in executing the proposed projects.

The delegation included Associate Professor Dr KM Azam Chowdhury from Dhaka University's Department of Oceanography, UGC Public Management Division Additional Director Md Golam Mostafa, and Assistant Director Md Muhibullah. Prof Dr Md Nazmus Sadat, from KU's Forestry and Wood Technology Discipline and vice-chancellor of Narayanganj University of Science and Technology, participated as an adviser on climate change and coastal zone management.
