Dhaka: Islamic University University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Professor Dr Mamun Ahmed today emphasized the necessity of transforming universities into centers focused on skilled human resource development rather than just institutions that award degrees. "The government and the UGC are working together to equip students with essential soft skills, and a nationwide soft skills development programme will be launched soon," he stated while addressing the central orientation programme for first-year undergraduate students of the 2025-26 academic session at Islamic University, where he was the special guest.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon participated virtually as the chief guest, and Adviser for Education and Primary and Mass Education Mahdi Amin attended as a special guest. The UGC chairman highlighted the importance of graduates acquiring digital literacy, communication skills, and critical thinking abilities alongside academic knowledge to remain competitive in the job market.
Dr Mamun discussed the government's initiative to modernize higher education through technology, aiming to develop the skills and competencies required for employment. He revealed plans for a digital transformation programme across all public universities, featuring uninterrupted Wi-Fi connectivity, smart classrooms, and eventually fully digital campuses, to ensure equal access to global knowledge and research facilities.
He also announced plans to introduce mandatory internships to strengthen the connection between higher education and employment. Internship opportunities will be created in both public and private industries with financial support, allowing students to gain practical workplace experience before completing their graduation.
Dr Mamun emphasized the importance of hard work, discipline, and moral values for achieving success alongside academic excellence, urging students to prepare themselves as responsible citizens for the future. Islamic University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr AKM Matinur Rahman, who chaired the programme, sought UGC support for constructing a boundary wall to enhance campus security, building a permanent stadium, upgrading the university's access road, and addressing the shortage of teachers.
