Rangpur: Two more women succumbed to dengue in Rangpur on Sunday, increasing the total death toll from the mosquito-borne disease in the Rangpur division to five this year.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, sources from Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RpMCH) and Prime Medical College Hospital (PMCH) confirmed the deaths. Minara Begum, aged 40, died while receiving treatment in the ICU at RpMCH, and Jannati Khatun, also aged 40, passed away at PMCH.
Minara Begum, a resident of Pirganj upazila in Rangpur, was admitted to RpMCH on September 8, 2026, after arriving from Dhaka. Her condition worsened, necessitating a transfer to the ICU, where she died around 9 am today. Brigadier General Md Ashikur Rahman, Director of RpMCH, confirmed her dengue-related death to BSS at 8:25 pm today.
Meanwhile, PMCH sources reported that Jannati Begum from Mithapukur upazila of Rangpur initially sought treatment at RpMCH for dengue. As her condition deteriorated, she was moved to the ICU at PMCH, where she died this afternoon.
Dr. Md Tauhidul Islam, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at RpMCH, emphasized the rapid deterioration that can occur in dengue patients. He advised immediate hospitalization if symptoms such as extreme weakness, abdominal pain, vomiting, bleeding, breathing difficulties, abnormal drowsiness, or decreased urine output appear. He cautioned against assuming recovery simply because the fever has subsided, stressing the importance of following medical advice regarding tests and treatment.
Meanwhile, sources from the Rangpur Divisional Health Director's office reported that 73 new dengue patients have been admitted to hospitals across the Rangpur division in the last 24 hours. From January 1 to September 13 this year, 1,335 patients with dengue symptoms have been admitted to hospitals in the division, with 1,219 patients having recovered and returned home. Currently, 113 dengue patients remain under treatment at various hospitals in the division.
