Cox's bazar: Two siblings drowned in a pond at Kaira Para of West Sonaichhari under Pekua upazila of the district on Sunday afternoon. The deceased were identified as Noor-e-Jannat, 8, and Mohammad Hasan Mia, 7, children of Nurul Amin of Maulawi Hasan's Jum area under Ward No-4 of Toitong union of the upazila.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the children's mother, Chhakina Begum, visited her elder sister Hasina Begum's house in West Sonaichhari on Saturday with her two children. Around 2:30 pm on Sunday, the siblings were playing in the courtyard when they accidentally fell into a nearby pond as their mother and aunt were occupied with household chores.
After about an hour, family members noticed the children were missing and began searching for them. Later, the bodies were found floating in the pond. They were rescued and taken to Pekua Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared them dead.
Pekua Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sirajul Mostafa confirmed the incident and stated that the bodies were handed over to the family members.
