Rangamati: A court here today sentenced two persons, including the son of the victim, to death for killing a man in Sajek of the district in 2017. Rangamati District and Sessions Judge Md Ahsan Tarek pronounced the verdict at noon in presence of Sohel Chakma. The court also fined them Taka 50,000 each. The condemned convicts are Sohel Chakma, 22, son of the victim, and Alomoy Chakma, 32, both residents of Sajek in Rangamati.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, on the night of August 6, 2017, the convicts called Shanti Lal Chakma, 56, out of his home in Uttar Bhaibon Chhara area under Sajek Police Station. They later strangled him with a towel and slaughtered him with a sharp weapon. After confirming his death, they dumped the body into the nearby Gangaram River.
Nine days after the incident, police recovered the decomposed body of the victim from the Kachalong River. After examining the documents and recording the depositions of prosecution witnesses, the court found the charges against the accused proven beyond reasonable doubt and handed down the maximum punishment for the murder of Shanti Lal Chakma. Public Prosecutor of the court Advocate Pratim Roy Pampu confirmed the verdict.
