Natore: Two children drowned after being swept away by a strong current while bathing in the Nandakuja River in Gurudaspur upazila of Natore on Tuesday afternoon. The deceased were identified as Farhan, 7, son of Fazlur Rahman Faju, and Lam Islam, 8, son of Bablu, both residents of Shampur area.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the incident occurred around 3pm near Chandrapur No. 1 Government Primary School under Nazirpur union, as confirmed by Officer-in-Charge of Gurudaspur Police Station Abdul Hannan. Locals reported that the two children were swept away by the strong current while bathing in the river. A local resident, Arjun Haldar, discovered and recovered their bodies from the river.
Meanwhile, around 8pm, two policemen visited the children’s homes to prepare the mandatory inquest reports. This action sparked anger among local villagers, especially since the janaza prayers had already been held. The villagers attacked the policemen at WAPDA Bazar and confined them to a local madrasah. Additional police forces were dispatched to the location and successfully rescued the officers.
Sub-Inspector Abul Bashar and Constable Rakib were subsequently suspended over the incident, according to Mohammad Shariqul Haque, superintendent of police in Natore.
