Dhaka: A court in Cumilla has sentenced two members of the banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to 20 years’ rigorous imprisonment in an explosives case. Additionally, a woman, Khaleda Akhter Rani, has been sentenced to eight years’ rigorous imprisonment in the same case.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Judge Khairunnesa of the Additional District and Sessions’ Judge (Special Tribunal-6) Court of Cumilla delivered the verdict. The two men receiving 20-year sentences are Md Mostafizur Rahman alias Mintu, son of Aynal Haque alias Ruhul Quddus Master from Kalmidanga village in Sapahar upazila of Naogaon, and Mohammad Durul Huda alias Hasan, son of Md Ali Hossain from Chakpara area in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur.
The prosecution reported that police conducted a raid on a house in the Bishnupur area of Cumilla city on March 13, 2006. This operation was based on information provided by the then JMB chief Shaykh Abdur Rahman while in remand. A substantial quantity of explosives was recovered from the location, leading to the arrest of the accused.
During the trial, statements from 13 witnesses were recorded. After thoroughly examining the evidence, the court found the three accused guilty and imposed the respective sentences.
