Dhaka:Two inmates from Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj died while receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Saturday. The deceased have been identified as Rafiqul Islam, 59, and Mehedi Hasan Kazi, 18, both of whom were undergoing treatment for separate health conditions.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Mehedi Hasan, who was an SSC examinee from Madaripur, died due to dengue. Initially treated at the prison hospital, his condition worsened, leading to his transfer to the DMCH medicine department. Despite efforts, he passed away around 530 pm after being moved to the emergency department earlier in an unconscious state. Mehedi Hasan was an undertrial prisoner linked to a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

Rafiqul Islam, from Noakhali, experienced chest pain and became seriously ill while inside the jail. He was rushed to DMCH where he was declared dead at approximately 400 pm. It is suspected he suffered a stroke.

Following the deaths, Mehedi Hasan's relatives requested that his body be released without a post-mortem examination, resulting in a confrontation with prison guards and Ansar personnel. Police intervention was necessary to resolve the situation. The bodies of both inmates will be handed over to their families after the completion of official procedures.
