Barishal: Two activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) were detained with more than Tk 1 lakh in Babuganj upazila of Barishal on Wednesday, just hours before the national election. Commanding Officer of Army’s 62 East Bengal, Lieutenant Colonel Faiz Ahmed, stated that the detention was part of ongoing law and order and election security operations. The activists were intercepted while riding a motorcycle in the Madhabpasha area of Babuganj in the afternoon.
According to United News of Bangladesh, a search of the detainees resulted in the recovery of Tk 1,02,000 in cash and election-related materials. The individuals were subsequently handed over to Babuganj Police Station for further investigation. Mizanur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Airport Police Station, confirmed that the detainees identified themselves as BNP workers, Humayun Gazi and Enayet Kazi.
In addition to the cash, law enforcement officials recovered leaflets and voter slips associated with BNP candidate Ad Joynal Abedin, who is contesting for the Barishal-2 (Babuganj-Muladi) constituency. The discovery of these materials has raised questions about the intentions behind carrying such items during the sensitive period leading up to the national election.
