DHAKA: Khilgaon Thana Police have arrested two Awami League (AL) leaders and a Chhatra League leader in connection with the killing of Syed Nazmul Hasan during an anti-discrimination student movement in the Banosree area. The arrests were made during separate raids in the Goran area of the city on Sunday night and early Monday morning. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the arrested individuals include ward no 2 AL member Md Babul alias Kasai Babul, aged 54, Shantipur Unit AL general secretary Mohammad Azizul Haque Mukul, aged 49, and Paltan Thana Chhatra League's former general secretary Fahad Ullah, aged 40. Police detained Babul and Azizul from Goran at 11:15 pm on Sunday and Fahad from Goran's Shantipur area at 6:30 am on the following day, as confirmed by a police press release. The arrests followed the analysis of CCTV footage from the scene of the incident, which confirmed the involvement of the suspects in the murder of Nazmul. On July 19, 2024, thousands of students and citizens were peacefu lly protesting for quota reform on Road No. 1 of Banasree G Block when the incident occurred. During the protest, leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated groups allegedly attacked the anti-discrimination protesters. The assailants reportedly opened fire indiscriminately and hurled crude bombs at the demonstrators, leading to the tragic death of Nazmul. The 23-year-old physiotherapy technician was en route to Banasree Raji Hospital from his home in Aftab Nagar when he was shot in the chest and back, resulting in his immediate death. Following the incident, a relative of the victim, Abdul Malek, filed a murder case with Khilgaon Police Station on October 13. The police are continuing their investigation into the case.
