Bagerhat: Police have seized around 2,000kg of illegal polythene in Mollahat upazila of Bagerhat and arrested two people in connection with its transportation. The seizure was made this morning during a police drive at a check post in front of the Mollahat Power Generation Station on the Dhaka-Khulna highway.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, acting on a tip-off, police searched a Royal Paribahan bus travelling from Khulna and recovered 25 sacks of polythene weighing an estimated 2,000kg. The arrested individuals are Salauddin Sardar Muna, 31, son of Abu Hossain Sardar of Gadaipur village in Paikgachha upazila of Khulna, and Md Shipon Hossain, 18, son of the late Nur Mohammad of Shelabunia village in Mongla upazila.
Police indicated that their preliminary investigation revealed that the two men had been supplying illegal polythene to different parts of the country for an extended period. During interrogation, authorities also obtained the names of several others allegedly involved in the operation.
Mollahat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Qazi Ramjanul Haque stated that a case has been filed under Section 15(1) of the Environmental Protection Act, 2010 (amended).
