Chattogram: Two individuals have been apprehended in relation to the murder of an elderly woman in Purba Bailchhari village, located in the Banshkhali upazila. The arrests were made following a collaborative operation by law enforcement agencies.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the individuals arrested are identified as Kashem, the son of the deceased Rehana, and his spouse, Nargish Akhter. ARM Mozaffar Hossain, Assistant Director of RAB-7’s media wing, confirmed the arrests took place during a joint operation conducted by RAB-7 from Chattogram and RAB-15 from Cox’s Bazar. The operation was carried out in Lakshyachar union within Chakaria upazila in Cox’s Bazar.
Rehena Begum, aged 62, resided in Purba Bailchhari village. Her eldest son, Belal, was living abroad, while Kashem and his wife, Nargish, resided with her. Despite Belal sending financial support for Rehena’s medical treatment, allegations have surfaced that Kashem misappropriated these funds, sparking a prolonged family conflict.
It is reported that Kashem and Nargish attacked Rehena Begum with a sharp knife between the night of June 5 and the morning of June 6, 2025. Subsequently, they concealed the blood-stained clothing within the house. Upon discovery, locals and police transported Rehena to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Md. Muktar Ahmed, the victim’s elder brother, lodged a murder case at Banshkhali Police Station. RAB official Mozaffar Hossain explained the accused had been evading capture by relocating across Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar. Following a tip-off, a joint team successfully captured them, and they were subsequently handed over to Banshkhali Police Station for further legal proceedings.
