Dinajpur: Police arrested two banned Awami League (AL) leaders while they were preparing to flee to India through the Birampur border area. ‘Two Awami League leaders were detained as they were roaming suspiciously at the border village of Bhelar Par under Mukundapur Union of Birampur upazila on Friday morning,’ Superintendent of Police Md Marfat Hossain said.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, addressing a press briefing at his office, Hossain stated that local people intercepted the leaders and questioned their presence in the area. When the leaders failed to provide satisfactory replies, the local residents reported the suspicious activity to the Birampur police station, leading to their arrest.
The detained individuals have been identified as Mahmudul Azad Ripon, aged 48, who served as the joint general secretary of Barguna district AL, and Hafizur Rahman Iqbal, aged 57, the vice-president of Uzirpur upazila AL and a former UP chairman.
Officer-in-Charge of Birampur police station, Md Momtazul Haque, reported that the detainees admitted to planning an escape to India when questioned by the authorities. Following their arrest, the individuals were presented before the Dinajpur Senior Judicial Magistrate Court.
Court Police Inspector Aminul Islam noted that the Awami League leaders would be sent to jail pending an order from the judicial authorities.
