TVET sector needs government’s elevated priority for reforms, a study highlights

Kathmandu: A study has revealed the need of elevated priority of the government to bring wider reforms in the Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector. The results of study, undertaken by the Kathmandu University School of Education (KUSOED), were shared among multiple stakeholders at an uptake event organized in Pokhara, the capital city of gandaki province, today. The study has come up with several findings, including gaps in coordination among technical institutes and construction sector employers; unequal access to skill-based training and technical education among youths, weak linkage with employment and less priority of local level to formal TVET sector. On the occasion, Prof Mahesh Nath Parajuli of the Kathmandu University said the government has not performed explicitly embracing the spirit of technical vocational education and training. "Though TVET is a critical medium for advancing socio-economic transformation, the sector has received less attention from the government", he men tioned. However, a member of the Gandaki Province Public Service Commission, Kalpana Lamsal has laid emphasis on producing skilled human resource focusing on the middle class people. "The Gandaki Technical Education and Vocational Training Academy has prioritized monitoring and evaluation for this", she shared. Also speaking on the occasion, Gandaki University's Vice Chancellor Prof Nawaraj Devkota admitted that the TVET sector is weak in Nepal due to inadequate management education. "The TVET sector has remained weak due to gaps in the design and delivery of training to cater to the demand of labour market", Prof Devkota added. Presenting the conclusion of the study, researcher Dr Prakash Chandra Bhattarai, also the Associate Dean of the KUSOED, highlighted the need of increasing evidence-based research in the TVET sector for its further enhancement. A team of subject experts comprising Associate Prof Dr Bhattarai, KUSOED Development Education Department Head Dr Suresh Gautam and Dr Prakash Kumar Paudel undertook the research as part of the Linking Education and Labour Markets (LELAM) project being run by the KU.
