Dhaka: Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam today stated that allegations of enforced disappearance could be prosecuted under the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Act. He emphasized that the provisions necessary to address these offences are adequately covered by the existing legislation.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Chief Prosecutor Islam highlighted during a press briefing at his office that the elements constituting enforced disappearance have been integrated into the ICT Act. This integration, he argued, negates the need for a separate ordinance or tribunal dedicated specifically to such cases. His comments were in response to inquiries from journalists regarding the legal framework for addressing enforced disappearances.

The chief prosecutor reiterated that the ICT Act possesses the requisite jurisdiction to handle allegations of enforced disappearance, eliminating the necessity for additional legislative measures or the establishment of a new tribunal to address such issues.
