Dhaka: A court here today imposed a travel ban on former Kushtia-3 lawmaker Md Mahbubul Alam Hanif and former Kishoreganj-6 lawmaker Nazmul Hassan Papon, along with their family members, due to allegations of corruption.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Zakir Hossain Galib issued the orders after considering two separate petitions filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The petitions sought to restrict the travel of Hanif, his wife Foujia Alam, daughter Tanisha Alam, sons Fahim Afsar Alam and Farhan Sadik Alam, as well as Papon, his wife Roksana Hasan, daughters Suneya Rahman and Rushmila Rahman, son Rafsan Hasan, and son-in-law Rakin Al-Mahmud.
Confirming the development, ACC deputy director (public relations) Akterul Islam stated that the agency is actively investigating allegations that Hanif and his family have amassed illegal wealth through various illicit activities. These include extorting money from sand quarries, manipulating tenders, and embezzling government funds. The ACC’s plea highlighted the risk of Hanif and his family fleeing the country to avoid justice, given their undeclared properties both domestically and internationally.
In a similar plea concerning Papon, who is also the former president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), the ACC is examining accusations of government fund embezzlement and illegal wealth accumulation. The ACC noted that Papon and his family might attempt to transfer their unlawfully acquired properties and escape the country, thus necessitating the travel ban.
