Dhaka: A training workshop on ‘Practical aspects on Customs and VAT related laws and regulations’ was held at the boardroom of the Bangladesh Chamber of Industries (BCI) in the capital today. With BCI President Anwar-ul Alam Chowdhury (Parvez) in the chair, Abdul Hai Sarkar, Chairman of the Bangladesh Association of Banks (BAB), addressed the gathering as the chief guest.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the session featured Tarek Hasan, First Secretary, Customs, NBR, and Barrister Md. Badruzzaman Munsi, Second Secretary, VAT Policy, NBR, as speakers. A total of 30 representatives from various organizations and sectors participated in the workshop. BCI Director Dr. Delwar Hossain Raja was also present. The inaugural session was conducted by BCI Secretary General Dr. Md. Helal Uddin.

In his speech, Abdul Hai Sarkar, Chairman of BAB, pointed out the existing gap between taxpayers and tax collectors, stressing that reducing this gap could simplify tax collection and management. Sharing his business experiences, Sarkar emphasized the necessity of assessments by experienced professionals and the need for NBR to communicate its issues more effectively with businesses. He also highlighted the importance of involving the private sector in policy-making and expressed gratitude to BCI for organizing the workshop.

Anwar-ul Alam Chowdhury (Parvez) noted that BCI has been regularly organizing orientation and training workshops on industrialization, foreign trade, and other business-related laws and policies. He acknowledged a lack of knowledge in Customs and VAT areas, which often creates challenges for businesses, and thanked the BAB Chairman for his attendance.

In the second session of the workshop, Tarek Hasan and Barrister Md. Badruzzaman Munsi discussed various aspects of Customs and VAT laws and regulations, engaging with participants through a question-and-answer segment.
