Dhaka:Twenty grassroots youth leaders completed a three-day EcoMen training programme in Dhaka on Wednesday, focusing on gender-transformative environmental stewardship and inclusive climate action.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the programme, titled 'EcoMen: Training of Facilitators on Gender-Transformative Environmental Stewardship,' took place from October 5 to 7. It was organised by YouthNet Global and Bonhishikha, in partnership with SheRAA - Women's Climate Resilience and Adaptation Alliance, and supported by The Earth Society. The training is part of a consortium led by The Asia Foundation, with backing from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Bangladesh.

Sumaiya Binte Selim Sudha, chair of SheRAA, emphasized the importance of linking gender justice with climate and environmental justice during the closing session. Participants shared their learning experiences, discussed future plans, and received certificates.

Facilitators included Tasaffy Hossain, founder and managing director of Bonhishikha; Sohanur Rahman, executive coordinator of YouthNet Global; and other key members of YouthNet Global. The programme involved discussions, group activities, and practical exercises addressing how gender norms and power imbalances influence environmental interactions and decision-making.

The training also addressed climate resilience, gender justice, and the role of men and boys in challenging patriarchal norms. A significant focus was placed on recognising the role of care in climate action and holding governments and industries accountable for their climate commitments.

YouthNet Global highlighted that patriarchal structures shape resource use and environmental exploitation, calling for climate policies that address these issues. Sohanur Rahman noted, "The patriarchal norms that perpetuate social inequality are the same ones driving environmental exploitation."

The training aligns with international climate policy shifts, such as the Belém Gender Action Plan adopted at COP30 in Brazil, which aims to engage men and boys in achieving gender equality. The upcoming COP31 in Antalya, Turkey, will further explore these themes.
