Jamalpur: A Jamalpur court today sentenced three men to death for raping a housewife in 2023. The convicts were identified as Bulbul Ahmmed, 45, Kalam, 50, and Ruku, 55, all hailing from the Jamalpur Sadar upazila. The verdict was delivered by Judge Muhammad Abdur Rahim of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1, who reviewed 10 prosecution witnesses, medical reports, and other relevant documents to reach the decision. Public Prosecutor Advocate Md Fazlul Haque confirmed the judgment, noting that Bulbul and Ruku were not present at the time of the verdict as they were absconding.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the victim was the second wife of a man and operated a tea stall in front of Shah Jamal Mazar in the town. The accused had been persistently harassing her with indecent proposals. On May 14, 2023, around 10 pm, the victim was abducted by the accused as she returned to the tea stall. She was forcibly taken by an auto-rickshaw to Bulbul's house at Khupibari, where she was raped by the men. The ordeal continued as they transported her to Ruku's house, where she faced further assault. The victim managed to escape at around 3:30 am and reported the incident to her husband.
Following her report, a case was filed, leading to a police investigation. The authorities subsequently submitted a charge sheet against the accused, culminating in today's court decision.
