Munshiganj: A mobile court sentenced three fishermen to seven days' imprisonment, seizing a total of 2,20,000 meters of illegal current nets in separate operations on the Padma River for catching hilsa during a government-imposed fishing ban.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the district administration conducted these operations to enforce the ban on hilsa fishing.
The district administration sources reported that Additional District Magistrate Md Rezaul Karim led the drives in various areas of the Padma River, including Mollar Char, Kishoreganj, Bakchar, Sardarkandi, Kalir Char, and Banglabazar under Sadar upazila. The team seized 1,20,000 meters of illegal current nets, which were subsequently burned and destroyed.
District Fisheries Officer Golam Mehedi Hasan, Executive Magistrate Omar Faruk, Sadar Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Abul Hashem, members of the Bangladesh Coast Guard, and police personnel assisted in the operation. In a separate operation in the Padma River under Louhajang upazila, a mobile court sentenced three more fishermen to seven days' imprisonment for the same offense.
Led by Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Nesar Uddin, this operation resulted in the seizure and destruction of 1,00,000 meters of current nets. The convicted fishermen, identified as Md Latif, Sohrab Mia, and Shahjul Madbar, are all residents of Louhajang upazila. Senior Fisheries Officer of Louhajang Upazila Md Rezaul Islam, along with coast guard and police personnel, participated in the drive.
