Chheuriya:Thousands of devotees, mystics, and visitors have assembled at the shrine of Fakir Lalon Shah in Chheuriya, Kushtia, to commemorate the 136th death anniversary of the renowned Baul mystic, philosopher, and poet. The event celebrates his humanist philosophy through spiritual rituals, mystic songs, and discussions.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the three-day programme, which commenced on Saturday, will conclude late Monday with cultural events and a rural fair at the shrine. The main spiritual gathering, known as Sadhusanga, culminated on Sunday after the completion of key rituals.

On Sunday, the morning ritual, Balyaseba, was conducted, followed by Purna Seba at noon, which formally concluded the Sadhusanga. While many devotees started departing in the afternoon, some planned to remain until Monday to fulfill their spiritual commitments.

The annual gathering serves as an opportunity for attendees to reconnect with spiritual mentors, engage in mystic practices, and reflect on Lalon Shah's teachings on humanity, equality, self-purification, and communal harmony. Nizam Fakir from Gaibandha, a regular attendee of the event, mentioned the significance of the formal rituals, including Adhibas, Rakhal Seba, Balyaseba, and Purna Seba.

Mamun Sadhu expressed that devotees feel like one family when gathered at the shrine, where they practice Lalon Shah's humanist philosophy and mystic traditions. He noted that the completion of Purna Seba signals the time for farewells.

A student from the University of Chittagong attended to learn about Lalon Shah's philosophy, particularly his stance against social discrimination. She hoped to gain a deeper understanding of his messages of humanity, equality, and positive thinking.

Despite many devotees leaving after the rituals, the rural fair alongside the spiritual programme continued to attract visitors on Monday. The event, held from October 17 to 19 at Lalon Shah's shrine in Chheuriya Akhra Bari under Kumarkhali upazila, Kushtia district, drew crowds from both local and international origins.

The district administration, along with law enforcement agencies, ensured a multi-layered security arrangement for a peaceful and orderly event. Deputy Commissioner Touhid Bin Hasan stated that the anniversary was more than a commemorative occasion, offering a platform to promote Lalon Shah's humanist philosophy and secular outlook. Necessary measures were taken to ensure visitors' safety with coordinated efforts from law enforcement and relevant departments.

Since Lalon Shah's death on the first day of Kartik in 1297 Bangla year, his followers have observed his death anniversary with commemorative programmes, which have expanded over time through initiatives from Lalon Academy and the district administration. The annual gathering has evolved into a significant cultural and spiritual event, uniting people from various backgrounds to engage with the mystic poet's enduring message of love, humanity, and equality.
