Dhaka: The 3rd session of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad was prorogued today after nine sittings, which commenced on August 27. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, who is also the Leader of the House, delivered a valedictory speech marking the session's closure. Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, the Leader of the Opposition, also addressed the assembly on the occasion.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, before reading out the prorogation order from President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikrom, expressed gratitude to all members for their active participation and cooperation in discussions of national importance. He emphasized the importance of maintaining mutual respect and a cordial atmosphere in parliamentary proceedings, noting that differences of opinion are a normal facet of a democratic parliamentary system.
Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad urged lawmakers to prioritize the country's interests and avoid abusive language, as highlighted by the Leader of the House. He reported that the session, which began on August 27, 2026, included nine sittings where six bills were introduced and passed. Additionally, 35 parliamentary committees were formed and reconstituted, with one special committee also being reconstituted.
The Speaker detailed that members submitted notices on important issues under various provisions of the Rules of Procedure, which were addressed in accordance with parliamentary rules. He noted that 144 questions were submitted for answers from the Prime Minister, of which 15 were answered. Furthermore, 2,676 questions were submitted for answers from ministers, with 1,678 being addressed during the session.
Acknowledgments were extended to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman for his cooperation in parliamentary proceedings, as well as to Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, Cabinet members, and all parliamentarians. Gratitude was also expressed to Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal and the Panel of Chairmen for their efforts in ensuring a smooth session.
The Speaker thanked the Secretary of the Parliament Secretariat, officials, law enforcement agencies, and various service providers for their contributions, as well as journalists and media outlets for their coverage. He emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in developing and consolidating parliamentary democracy and expressed hope for lawmakers to reflect the people's aspirations.
Finally, the Speaker read out the order from President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir to prorogue the third session of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad under Article 72(1) of the Constitution of Bangladesh, marking the session's formal conclusion.
