Khulna:A confrontation occurred between students of Khulna University and local residents near the university campus on Friday night, sparked by a Facebook post.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the conflict began when several KU students allegedly assaulted a local youth named Sajal over his Facebook posts concerning the drug situation within the university and alleged immoral activities at certain residences on Hall Road. This prompted Sajal's friends and other locals to gather at the hall gate, where they claimed the students also attacked an elderly local man.
Some university students reported that an individual using a pseudonym on social media made offensive posts targeting them. They invited this person to the Khaja Gate area for an explanation. Subsequently, a group of locals, allegedly supported by political figures, gathered and attempted to take the elderly man away, resulting in violence.
The students alleged that the group attacked them with bricks and stones, injuring several students, and maintained that they did not initiate the violence but were attacked first.
Prof Dr Md Salauddin, director of student affairs at KU, stated that police and faculty members have managed to bring the situation under control. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the incident. The youth involved was handed over to Harintana Police Station.
Md Iqbal Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Harintana Police Station, mentioned that the tension was over what seemed to be a minor incident, but assured that the situation is now completely under control.
