Dhaka: Ten additional parliamentary standing committees have been established, assigning senior BNP leaders and other lawmakers as chairpersons across various ministries. This development marks a significant step in the ongoing process of setting up the parliamentary oversight mechanism following the formation of the new parliament.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the Agriculture Ministry-related Parliamentary Standing Committee will be led by BNP leader Gayeshwar Chandra Roy. In addition, teacher leader Selim Bhuiyan has been appointed as the chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Education Ministry, while Selima Rahman will preside over the committee on the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs.
The Road Transport and Bridges Ministry's committee will be chaired by Whip Rakibul Islam. Meanwhile, Abul Kalam Azad Siddique and Kalim Uddin Ahmed have been designated as chairmen for the committees on the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, and the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, respectively.
Amanullah Aman takes on the role of chairman for the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Whip GK Gause will lead the committee on the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, with Nasser Rahman as the chairman for the Ministry of Land. Rafiqul Islam Jamal has been appointed to oversee the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
The formation of these committees is a part of the total 50 parliamentary standing committees, of which 39 are ministry-related, and 11 pertain to parliamentary affairs. To date, 25 of these committees have been formed, including 19 that are ministry-related. These committees are instrumental in scrutinizing ministry activities, examining bills, reviewing issues referred to them by the House, and making recommendations on pertinent matters. The remaining committees are anticipated to be established in subsequent phases.
