Rangpur:State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hossain Azad, MP, announced the nearing completion of the feasibility study for the Teesta Master Plan (TMP), with a Development Project Proposal (DPP) expected to follow soon.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the State Minister emphasized the importance of the Teesta Master Plan's implementation to benefit those who have suffered long-term hardships. Expert opinions are being sought from consultants in China, the Netherlands, and Malaysia. Azad made these remarks during an inspection of the Shyamasundari Canal in Rangpur city.

The State Minister also highlighted the potential renewal of the Farakka Treaty, originally established in 1977, as a testament to India's continued friendship with Bangladesh. He noted that actions taken by a neighboring country over the past 17 years have led to ambiguity, and a delegation met with representatives in Kolkata last June to discuss the treaty.

Regarding local development, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed the enhancement of canals, rivers, and water bodies in divisional cities. The Rangpur City Corporation and Bangladesh Water Development Board are collaborating on the Shyamasundari Canal development, with Taka 14 crore allocated to the project. Approximately 18 percent of the work is completed, with the remainder expected by June 2027.

The State Minister addressed challenges, including waste dumping into the Shyamasundari Canal, and proposed measures such as public awareness campaigns and possible CCTV installations. Walkways are planned along the canal, and strict action is promised against any obstruction to the development project. Deputy Commissioner Israt Jahan and other officials were present during the inspection.
