Rangpur: The flash flood situation in the Teesta region has begun to improve significantly after a sharp decline in water levels in the river Teesta, attributed to the absence of rainfall in the greater Rangpur district and its upstream regions over the last 24 hours.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) officials reported a notable reduction in the onrushing water from upstream, contributing to the falling water levels in the Teesta. This trend is expected to persist in the coming days, providing relief to the affected areas.
No new areas have been inundated, as the receding floodwaters have started to alleviate conditions in the affected low-lying and char areas of Rangpur, Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, and Gaibandha districts. However, approximately 20,000 people remain marooned in these areas and continue to face difficulties despite the gradual improvement.
Riverbank erosion with unstable soil texture has been reported in a few locations along the Teesta river. In response, district and upazila administrations have intensified their relief efforts to aid those impacted by the floods and alleviate their suffering.
BWDB’s Acting Chief Engineer of Rangpur Zone, Dr. Mohd Sarfaraz Banda, stated that the flood situation is improving due to the significant reduction in upstream water flow. Similarly, BWDB Superintending Engineer for Rangpur Circle, Md Ahsan Habib, noted that the Teesta’s water levels have decreased below the danger mark at key points.
The Teesta river, known for its rapid fluctuations, often causes sudden floods and rapid water recessions, leading to uncertainty for local residents. However, with the current decrease in rainfall and water flow, normal conditions are expected to return soon.
Relief distribution efforts are underway, with Gangachara upazila administration, assisted by local union parishads, actively distributing rice to flood-affected families. Gangachara Upazila Nirbahi Officer, Mahmud Hasan Mridha, assured that necessary assistance is being provided and relief operations are ongoing across affected upazilas.
Rangpur Divisional Commissioner, Md Shahidul Islam, confirmed that district and upazila administrations, along with BWDB and local representatives, are closely monitoring the situation. Adequate preparations and stockpiles of relief materials are in place to support ongoing relief efforts in the flood-hit regions.
