Dhaka: BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday expressed his commitment to repay the people's love by establishing an accountable state. In his message marking the 48th founding anniversary of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), he emphasized the importance of a free, fair, and neutral election, marking the end of what he described as fifteen years of fascist rule and exploitation.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Tarique Rahman highlighted the party's dedication to transforming Bangladesh into a welfare state. He called on BNP leaders, activists, supporters, and well-wishers to continue their efforts in serving the country and maintaining public trust and confidence. The Prime Minister extended greetings to the citizens of Bangladesh and BNP affiliates on the party's anniversary, viewing the occasion as a source of joy and inspiration.
The BNP was founded by then-President Ziaur Rahman on September 1, 1978. Tarique Rahman recalled the establishment of the party as a pivotal moment in the restoration of democracy in the country. He credited Ziaur Rahman with reinstating democratic rights and enabling banned political parties to resume political activities. This, he said, initiated a new era of pluralistic democracy in Bangladesh.
Tarique Rahman paid homage to Ziaur Rahman, recognizing him as the proclaimer of independence and a successful statesman. He also acknowledged former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia for her role in popularizing the party across Bangladesh through her leadership.
He further stated that the BNP has consistently acted as a vigilant guardian of the nation's independence and sovereignty, sacrificing alongside pro-democracy citizens whenever these principles were threatened. Tarique Rahman honored the memory of BNP leaders and activists who lost their lives in the pursuit of democracy and good governance.
He noted that BNP has been entrusted to govern whenever free elections occurred. During its administrations, the party implemented significant measures to reinforce democracy, such as the restoration of the parliamentary system and the enhancement of women's education.
Tarique Rahman concluded by asserting that BNP's commitment to democracy and economic prosperity has solidified its status as the country's most popular political party. He reiterated that the pro-democracy people of Bangladesh are the foundation of BNP's political strength, with the party being synonymous with the effort to build a democratic and self-reliant nation.
