Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman today virtually addressed a discussion as the chief guest on 'National Revolution and Solidarity Day', organized by the party at Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center in the capital's Agargaon.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Tarique Rahman recalled the significance of November 7, 1975, as a pivotal day in identifying the adversaries and allies of Bangladesh. He stressed the importance of learning from history to shape the future, emphasizing that neglecting historical lessons could lead to mistakes.
Rahman outlined the events of November 7, 1975, describing it as a day when forces aiming to undermine Bangladesh's sovereignty and democratic rights were defeated by patriotic soldiers and citizens. He highlighted the subsequent attempts by these forces to destabilize the country, notably through incidents like the BDR Pilkhana massacre, and the long struggle to restore democracy in Bangladesh.
He urged for a commitment to prevent future violations of the country's rights and emphasized the need for national unity, drawing inspiration from past revolutions and uprisings. Rahman stressed that all historical movements in Bangladesh were fundamentally aimed at establishing the rights of the people.
Rahman also criticized the current political scenario, questioning whether political discussions addressed the concerns of non-political citizens, farmers, and workers. He highlighted the plight of potato farmers facing financial losses and the challenges in onion storage, arguing for prioritizing their issues over political agendas like referendums.
He expressed concerns over women's employment, the rising unemployment rate, and the deteriorating education system, urging for meaningful reforms to address these challenges. Rahman pointed to the fragile state of the banking sector and economic growth, emphasizing the need for a stable, democratically elected government.
