Dhaka: BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman today addressed the need for unity among democratic forces to counteract secret tactics employed by the defeated fascist party aiming to disrupt the democratic transition in the country. Rahman emphasized the importance of vigilance against these forces at the ‘Hindu Representative Conference’ organized by the Matua Bahujan Samaj Unity Alliance at the Bangladesh Krishibid Institution auditorium.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Tarique Rahman urged the interim government and anti-fascist democratic forces to maintain their guard against the resurgence of the fascist party. He warned that national instability could facilitate the return of these forces. Rahman called for sustained anti-fascist unity, stressing that the primary strategy to counteract the secret maneuvers of these groups is to uphold national unity.
During his speech, Rahman outlined the interim government’s duty to establish a democratic system in a Bangladesh free from fascism, emphasizing accountability through the people’s vote. He stated that the government should not prioritize any party’s partisan interests and that registering ‘Note of Dissent’ is a more appropriate approach in areas of disagreement.
Rahman highlighted the lack of safety for all citizens under the previous autocratic regime, pointing to uninvestigated attacks like those on the Ramu Buddhist temple in 2012 and Nasirnagar, Brahmanbaria in 2016. He stressed the necessity of the rule of law to ensure security for all citizens, arguing that only justice can provide true security.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, also speaking at the event, reflected on the opportunity to build a non-communal, progressive, and democratic Bangladesh post-July uprising. He advocated for a country that protects the rights of all ethnicities and religions, ensuring economic and political rights for all.
The event was presided over by Somnath De, with Kapil Krishna Mondal moderating. Other notable speakers included BNP Standing Committee members and leaders from various alliances and welfare fronts.
