Sunway City:Sunway Medical Centre (SMC) has achieved the top position in Malaysia for Paediatrics in Newsweek's World's Best Specialised Hospitals 2027 ranking. Oncology has been highlighted as a key area of excellence within this specialty. This marks the first time SMC has been included in this prestigious global list.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the accolade follows SMC's expansion of its specialised paediatric services, notably through the establishment of Tower F, a dedicated Children's Tower. This development enhances the hospital's capacity to deliver comprehensive, integrated, and family-centred paediatric care.
The ranking positions SMC among the world's leading hospitals, evaluated alongside renowned institutions such as Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, and Johns Hopkins Hospital in the United States. This assessment covered 13 medical specialties.
Sunway Healthcare Group president Datuk Lau Beng Long stated that the recognition underscores the hospital's progress in paediatric, oncology, and neurology services. He noted that the debut in Newsweek's ranking is a major milestone for SMC, further emphasizing the significance of their new 216-bed Children's Tower, which offers paediatric subspecialty services with support from a multidisciplinary team.
SMC is home to the Children's Health and Development Centre, offering extensive paediatric subspecialty services and features the country's first private hospital 24-hour Children's Walk-in and Emergency Department, a Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, and specialized inpatient wards.
Chief Executive Officer Erica Lam of SMC remarked that the recognition reaffirms the hospital's dedication to clinical excellence and patient-centred care, especially in paediatric services. She emphasized the hospital's commitment to advancing clinical standards and enhancing specialized healthcare services.
The statement also mentioned that Tower F was designed with a focus on child- and family-centred care, incorporating age-appropriate furnishings and child-friendly environments to meet the holistic needs of young patients and their families.
This recent recognition comes after SMC's fourth consecutive year being acknowledged in Newsweek's Best Specialised Hospitals Asia Pacific 2026 rankings, where it was distinguished in eight specialties. SMC also achieved the No. 1 spot in Malaysia in Newsweek's World's Best Hospitals rankings in 2025 and 2026 and was recognized in the World's Best Smart Hospitals 2026 ranking.
As Malaysia's largest private quaternary hospital, SMC is the flagship of Sunway Healthcare Group, with over 300 medical consultants across 80 specialties and 28 Centres of Excellence. The opening of Tower F has increased its licensed bed capacity to 961, further enhancing its ability to deliver complex and specialized care.
SMC is the first private hospital in Malaysia to receive three major accreditations the Joint Commission International Gold Seal of Approval, Australian Council on Healthcare Standards International accreditation, and Malaysian Society for Quality in Health accreditation.
The World's Best Specialised Hospitals 2027 ranking was based on international peer recommendations, specialty-specific accreditations, and the implementation of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures.
