Dhaka: Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today announced that the admission process for students at Thakurgaon Medical College will officially commence next year. Also serving as BNP Secretary General, Mirza Fakhrul confirmed that the primary work to establish the proposed medical college is set to begin within the upcoming months.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Mirza Fakhrul made these remarks at the inauguration ceremony of an eye camp, supported by Nepal, at Thakurgaon Diabetic and Healthcare Hospital on Sunday morning. During the event, he stated, “Since the majority of people in our region are poor, it is not possible for many to travel to Dhaka for treatment. The government is working sincerely to reach modern healthcare to the doorsteps of these ordinary and marginalized people.”
He further elaborated that the current government has organized these eye camps through bilateral discussions with the Nepalese government, aiming to enhance services for eye patients in the area. Plans are also underway to expand the scope of such camps across each upazila of the district incrementally.
Mirza Fakhrul also highlighted efforts to improve local healthcare infrastructure, noting that the 250-bed Thakurgaon General Hospital has been upgraded to 600 beds. He emphasized ongoing efforts to enhance healthcare quality and accessibility for the common people.
The event featured Mr. Pratik Karki, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Nepal to Bangladesh, as the guest of honour. He remarked on the strong historical bond between Nepal and Bangladesh, emphasizing friendship and mutual cooperation across various sectors, including healthcare.
Additional dignitaries in attendance included Mr. Padma Narayan Chowdhury, Chairman of Biratnagar Eye Hospital, Nepal, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rafiqul Haque, Superintendent of Police Belal Hossain, and District BNP President Mirza Faisal Amin.
