Dhaka: Speakers at a divisional-level dialogue unanimously emphasized that reforming and strengthening local government institutions (LGIs) is crucial for reflecting the hopes and aspirations of grassroots populations. LGIs serve as vital symbols for the urban, sub-urban, and rural communities, necessitating their empowerment.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the dialogue titled “Democratic Decentralization and Reformation of Local Government in the Light of Mass-aspirations” was organized by the Governance Advocacy Forum (GAF) and supported by UNDP, held at Victoria Convention Hall. Experts, development activists, and civil society members shared their insights, highlighting the importance of these reforms.

Aniruddha Roy, Assistant Director (Governance, Rights, and Justice), presented a draft reform proposal during the event, outlining the necessity to fortify local government institutions. The meeting, chaired by Foyzullah Chowdhury, Executive Director of Barendra Unnayan Prochesta, included addresses by Valiant Freedom Fighter Nazrul Islam, Haragram Union Parishad Chairman Abul Kalam Azad, Director of RULFAO Afzal Hossain, Director of Bangladesh National Women Lawyers Association Advocate Dil Sitara Chuni, and Director of Anagrasar Samaj Unnayan Sangstha Raj Kumar Shaon.
