Stocks Extend Losing Streak Amid Political Uncertainty

Dhaka: Stocks today extended its losing streak as persistent investor worries over lack of clear indication in the political front centering the upcoming national election triggered a sustained selling pressure, pushing the indices down to a four-month low and leaving investors on tenterhooks.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, DSEX, the broad index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), declined by 41.9 points to settle at 5,019 points compared to 5,061 points in the previous trading session. Market turnover decreased by 12.5% to Taka 4.5 billion from Taka 5.1 billion in the previous session.

On the sectoral front, Engineering issues accounted for the highest turnover at 13.8%, followed by the Textile sector at 10.6% and Pharma at 10.5%. While most sectors displayed negative returns, Paper saw a correction of 3.8%, Life Insurance 3.3%, and Jute 2.3%. Meanwhile, the Services and Telecom sectors managed to settle slightly higher, both recording a 0.4% increase.

Out of the 397 issues traded, 56 advanced, 274 declined, and 67 remained unchanged. The port city bourse, CSE, also ended in the negative zone, with the Selective Categories' Index (CSCX) and All Share Price Index (CASPI) decreasing by 55.0 points and 91.1 points, respectively.
