Dhaka: Fisheries, Livestock, and Agriculture Minister Mohammed Aminur Rashid on Sunday announced that the government has implemented special security measures across the country's cattle markets to safeguard traders, farmers, and buyers ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
According to United News of Bangladesh, to prevent the circulation of counterfeit currency, detector machines have been installed at these markets. Additionally, dedicated banking services are available on-site, enabling sellers to deposit earnings or open new accounts instantly, ensuring a secure monetary flow. The minister shared these updates while conversing with journalists after visiting the Diabari cattle market in the capital.
Responding to inquiries, Rashid assured that Bangladesh has a sufficient supply of sacrificial animals for Eid-ul-Azha, with local livestock expected to meet the demand. He emphasized that the production of cattle, goats, and buffaloes locally is more than adequate. Rashid also proposed a future shift to a 'live weight' pricing system to enhance transaction transparency and standardization.
The Livestock Minister dismissed concerns over market manipulation, citing the free interaction between thousands of buyers and sellers, which makes it difficult to form an artificial syndicate. Rashid clarified that animal prices are dictated by market competition and supply-demand dynamics. He added that the government has deployed sufficient personnel to maintain discipline, security, and smooth operations in cattle markets across the country. Director General of the Department of Livestock Services, Md. Shahzaman Khan, was also present during the minister's visit.
