Sirajganj: Local residents on Thursday formed a human chain in Chauhali upazila of Sirajganj district demanding urgent steps to protect the banks of the Jamuna River from erosion. The hour-long programme was held around noon at Jotpara Jamuna river ghat in the upazila.
According to United News of Bangladesh, speakers at the event highlighted the ongoing issue of river erosion that has been causing significant land loss in different parts of the upazila, instilling fear among the residents. The local populace is urging the installation of geo-bags along the Jamuna riverbanks to prevent further erosion. Additionally, they have called for a halt to the movement of sand-carrying bulkheads, which they believe exacerbates the erosion problem.
The protesters warned that without immediate action, residential areas, the Upazila Parishad, educational institutions, and other establishments along the river could face destruction. Following the human chain, the protesters submitted a memorandum to the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), outlining their demands and concerns.
In a related incident during the programme, some protesters set fire to bulkheads in the Jamuna River area, expressing their frustration and urgency for action.
