Dhaka: Liberation War Affairs Adviser Farooq-e-Azam, Bir Pratik, has emphasized the necessity for the state to prioritize the welfare of elderly people nationwide.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Farooq-e-Azam expressed concern over the state’s insufficient attention to the needs of the elderly, resulting in their neglect and marginalization. He highlighted the importance of societal and moral responsibility in caring for senior citizens, recognizing them as a vital part of the nation’s fabric.
The adviser addressed the issue as the chief guest at a discussion commemorating the 8th anniversary of “The Senior Citizens Society” at the Seniors Club. He pointed out the growing indifference toward senior citizens, noting that many are being abandoned by society, the state, and even their families. Farooq-e-Azam called for collective action against the mistreatment of elders and emphasized the need for unity and mutual respect to build a sustainable society for future generations.
Furthermore, Farooq-e-Azam mentioned that most members of the advisory council are senior citizens, with only two exceptions. Reflecting on his role, he expressed surprise at his current responsibilities and described the immense challenges faced by his team in their efforts to serve the nation.
The adviser also commented on societal changes, noting that individuals who were once seen as villains have become heroes, a trend he believes should not repeat in the future.
The event was presided over by The Senior Citizens Society President MA Malek, who is also the editor of the Daily Azadi and an Ekushey Padak-winning journalist. The meeting featured speeches from various prominent figures, including General Secretary Sirajul Haque Ansari, Vice Presidents AM Kamal Uddin Chowdhury and Lion Kabir Uddin Bhuiyan, Joint Secretary Freedom Fighter Professor Dilip Kanti Das, and several others.
