Dhaka: Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad, Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, emphasized on Tuesday that it is the state’s responsibility to eliminate inequalities at every level of society. He remarked that the All-Party Caucus can play a significant role in addressing inequalities across various societal layers, thereby helping to ensure formal recognition of the contributions made by marginalized and disadvantaged communities to the country’s development.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the Speaker made these comments during a meeting with a delegation led by Dr. Debapriya Bhattacharya, Convener of the Citizen’s Platform for SDGs, Bangladesh, and Distinguished Fellow of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD). The delegation paid a courtesy call on the Speaker at his office in the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. The discussion focused on how the caucus could advance the interests of disadvantaged, underprivileged, and marginalized communities through the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with particular attention to goals related to peace, justice, and strong institutions.
The meeting also addressed the role of the Caucus in ensuring overall national development and improving access to education, healthcare, and safe food for disadvantaged communities. This would be achieved through the implementation of the government’s political commitments, supported by institutional and technical assistance, along with transparency and accountability.
The Citizen’s Platform delegation took the opportunity to congratulate Hafiz Uddin Ahmad on his election as Speaker and expressed their condolences over the recent passing of his wife, the noted educationist Dilara Hafiz.
