Dhaka:Reacting to comments by the Jamaat Ameer, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir on Friday emphasized the need for Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, the largest religious political party, to review the joint statement issued after Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's official visit to Japan. He urged the opposition to demonstrate responsible behavior and communication before making public comments.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Kobir addressed the media at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, responding to remarks made by Leader of the Opposition Dr. Shafiqur Rahman. Kobir highlighted the importance of understanding the joint communiqué, dismissing claims that the country's interests were compromised during the visit.
The media briefing was also attended by Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, the future Foreign Secretary, and Additional Foreign Secretary AKM Shahidul Karim. The State Minister stressed that accusations regarding the sale or compromise of national interests were baseless if the joint statement was not properly examined.
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman had earlier expressed concerns via Facebook about any decisions related to the Matarbari deep-sea port that might threaten national sovereignty. He urged transparency in governmental actions concerning national interests, asserting that past concessions had not benefited Bangladesh.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman concluded his four-day visit to Japan, returning to Dhaka early Friday, accompanied by his wife Dr. Zubaida Rahman and other delegation members. Their arrival was marked by a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight landing at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 248 am.
