Dhaka: Jahangirnagar University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan today emphasized the importance of the spirit of independence in guiding the nation towards justice, dignity, and prosperity. He delivered this message in commemoration of Independence and National Day, urging that independence should not merely be seen as a historical achievement but as an ongoing commitment to building a just and prosperous society.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Vice-Chancellor expressed his deep homage to the martyrs of the Liberation War, recognizing their sacrifice for the country’s freedom. ‘I remember with profound respect the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for our independence,’ he stated. He also acknowledged the sacrifices of those who were killed or injured during recent mass uprisings against authoritarian rule, paying tribute to those affected by these movements.

Dr. Ahsan further highlighted the significant role of women during the War of Independence, expressing his deepest respect for those who suffered mental and physical abuse. ‘Their sacrifices will always be remembered,’ he affirmed, emphasizing the enduring impact of their contributions.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor provided a historical perspective on the nation’s struggle for independence, noting that the roots of their fight lay in movements against discrimination, exploitation, and repression. He referenced the Language Movement of 1952 as a foundational moment leading up to the nine-month war in 1971.

Describing Bangladesh as a nation of bravery, Dr. Ahsan remarked on the country’s resilience in the face of injustice, stating, ‘We have always raised our voices for justice and rights. We have never been completely suppressed.’ He emphasized the importance of unity in resisting injustice and overcoming adversities.

Addressing recent political changes, he mentioned that a democratically elected government now holds power after a long period of authoritarian rule. The Vice-Chancellor expressed the people’s expectation that the current government will prioritize national welfare. As the nation marks its 55th anniversary of independence, he conveyed hope that the people’s aspirations will be realized through the government’s actions.
